Port of Helsinki throughput slides 3 percent
Cargo traffic at the Port of Helsinki in January-August fell 3 percent year-on-year to 6.6 million tons, the Port Authority said. The eight-month volume of imports and exports shrank by 3% from last year’s numbers, to 3.5 and 3.2 million tons, respectively.
In August, shipments of cargo through the port’s terminals decreased by 7% to 800,000 tons. The monthly volume of inbound goods dropped by 11%, of outbound cargoes - by 15%.
Port of Helsinki is a premier port of Finland and the largest passenger port, which handles 77 percent of all passenger traffic of the country. Helsinki ranks the third Baltic Sea passenger port. In 2011, the port saw 10 million passengers.
