In January-May 2009, Sea Port of Saint Petersburg handled 17.879 million tonnes of cargo (-26%, year-on-year). In May, the port’s throughput fell by 22%, year-on-year, to 4.331 million tonnes.
In the 5-month period, transshipment of dry bulk fell by 29% to 2.797 million tonnes, dry loose cargo – by 54% to 77.6 million tonnes, timber – by 90% to 70.9 million tonnes. In January-May the port handled 4.390 million tonnes of general cargo (-30%) and 5.338 million tonnes of containerized cargo (33%, year-on-year).
Meanwhile the port started to handle cargo delivered by ferries: for the five months it handled 100,500 tonnes of such cargo. Loading of liquid bulk cargo increased by 3% to 5.105 million tonnes.
The port’s turnover of vessels totaled 6,048 units (3,037 in and 3,011 out) including 2,589 vessels in May (1,310 in and 1,279 out).
Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands in the mouth of the Neva-river, in the Neva Bay at the eastern side of the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea). The Big Port of St. Petersburg includes the mouth of the Neva-river, the Neva Bay, Kronshtadt and the complex of structures protecting St. Petersburg from flood (the dam). Icebreaker assistance is carried out within winter navigation.
