Construction of 25-MW icebreaker is 1.5 year behind schedule, RF Transport Ministry says

The construction of 25-MW icebreaker is behind the schedule. IAA PortNews journalist cites Deputy Transport Minister Victor Olersky as saying at the meeting of the Marine Board of RF Government. According to him, as of May 12, technical readiness of the four icebreakers being built under the state contract is the following: ЛК-25 – 13.61%; ЛК-16 (230) – 62%; ЛК-16 (509) – 40% and ЛК-16 (231) – 35%.

“We have almost no problems with Vyborg Shipyard (building 16-MW icebreakers – editor's note)... but there are certain problems with the 25-MW icebreaker. However, certain structure found with Nordic Yards will let complete the construction, 1.5 years behind the schedule though,” the official said.

Icebreaker of Project 22600 was laid down by Baltiysky Zavod (Saint-Petersburg) on October 10, 2012. FSUE Rosmorport plans to use the icebreaker as an auxiliary vessel when escorting convoys in challenging ice conditions at the Northern Sea Route or for independent assistance to vessels in shallow Arctic areas, and in estuaries of rivers, for helping to unload cargo on land-fast ice, for towing ships and other floating constructions in ice and in plain water, for expeditor voyages, firefighting at vessels and oil-extracting platforms. The contract deadline for the icebreaker construction is November 2015. Under the contract valued at RUB 7.94 bln (almost EUR 200 mln), the vessel is to be delivered to the customer (FSUE Rosmorport) in December 2015.

An agreement for the turn-key construction and outfitting of the 2,500-tonne superstructure of LK-25 icebreaker of Project 22600 was signed by St. Petersburg based Baltic Shipyard (member of United Shipbuilding Corporation) and the German shipbuilding holding Nordic Yards in August 2013.

Icebreaker of project 22600 is a powerful diesel-electric icebreaker with a wide range of functional capabilities. It is to be built under the programme on renovation of the state icebreaking fleet.
