The fourth Russian-Japanese Workshop «Cooperation in Shipbuilding and Shiprepair» was held on 4–5 September in St. Petersburg, Krylov Centre says in its press release. The workshop organized by the Japan Ship Machinery & Equipment Association (JSMEA) and Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RMRS) was attended by a delegation of thirty leading Japanese manufacturers and suppliers of marine equipment. The workshop agenda included discussions of the issues related to prospective shipbuilding projects for Russian customers, access of the advanced marine equipment manufactured by leading Japanese companies to the Russian market as well as future cooperation in the field of innovations between shipbuilders of the two countries. High-tech projects of global scale in the field of energy resources are not feasible without international collaboration. Promotion of new ideas and spheres of cooperation in marine and offshore oil & gas industries have favorable effect on the development of technologies and innovations. Therefore, it seems quite logic that on 5 September the Russian and Japanese participants of the workshop paid a visit to the Krylov State Research Centre where they familiarized themselves with some experimental facilities and test techniques & procedures. In particular, they were demonstrated high-power loading machines for structural tests in the Static Loading & Life Time Test Hall, Hydrobaric Test Tanks, facilities for vibration & structural strength tests, and data acquisition & processing systems. The Russian and Japanese guests have also visited the deep-water towing tank, high-speed seakeeping basin, rotating-arm basin and newly-built ice model tank. The members of JSMEA delegation thanked the Krylov Centre management for the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the research & experimental infrastructure of the Centre noting the high-levelof Krylov’s research studies and expressed their hope for striking a mutually beneficial cooperation in future. This Workshop was hosted by St. Petersburg for the first time. The first three meetings were staged in Tokyo and Vladivostok in 2012–2013. These workshops indicated mutual interest for further collaboration in view of prospective oil & gas projects in Russia calling for construction of a wide range of various ship types and offshore structures. RMRS Deputy Director General Pavel Shikhov stressed: «The Russian Maritime Register of Shipping being one of the leading international classification societies with over 50 offices around the world is a kind of „bridge“ between domestic and foreign companies». In view of its Russian roots RMRS is interested to provide domestic shipyards and shipowners with comprehensive information about the capabilities of key foreign manufacturers in the field of marine material and equipment as well as available technologies. On the other hand, major foreign producers, including Japanese firms, seek cooperation with the Russian companies and regard RMRS as enabler in understanding the requirements for marine equipment supplied to Russia as well as relevant approval & survey procedures. The sphere of Japanese companies’ interests regarding business relations with the Russian classification society is focused on technical supervision over manufacture of materials and equipment as well as shiprepair.
