Cargo shipments by North-Western Shipping Company up 18% to 5.7 mln t in 2016

In January-December 2016 the volume of cargo carried by the vessels of North-Western Shipping Company (NWSC) (the company is a member of UCL Holding) totaled to 5.7 million tons, which is 18% higher than the volume carried over the same period last year, says the shipping company’s press center.

1.8 million tons (which exceeds 30%) of the shipping overall was conducted by the new vessels of NWSC – 10 vessels of DCV36 project (lead ship – “Amethyst”) and 7 vessels of RSD49 “Neva-Leader” project.

The following shipments were conducted by the vessels of NWSC: 1.8 million tons of grain cargo (+26%), 0.9 million tons of ferrous materials (-10%), 0.8 million tons of chemical and mineral fertilizers (no change, year-on-year), 0.25 million tons of timber (-22%), 0.62 million tons of coal (+82%), 0.5 million tons of construction materials ( up 8 times), 0.23 million tons of non-ferrous metal (+37%), 0.15 million tons of metal scrap (+9%), 0.4 million tons of other cargoes.

The majority of shipping – 4.1 million tons which equals to 73% - was formed by export cargo of the shipping company, its quantity growing by 21%. The majority of the exported range of items was formed by grain cargo – 1.12 million tons (62% of total volume), ferrous materials, metal scrap, coal, chemical and mineral fertilizers, timber.

Most of grain exports (62% or 1.12 million tons) was formed by grain transshipped from NWSC vessels onto large sea-going ships, from Russian ports of the Azov Sea to the off-harbour terminal of port Kavkaz (Black Sea). This volume grew by 35%, year-on-year.

The transportation between foreign ports equaling to 0.9 million tons which accounts for 16% of the overall volume, shrank by 22% for the most part at the expense of the major types of cargo of that sector –fertilizers, coal, ores, timber and construction materials.

The volume of import cargo shipping of the shipping company fell by 45% to 0.15 million tons, which was caused by the reduction of cargo traffic from the European countries to Russia. The import ratio in the general volume of traffic equaled to 2.7%.

The domestic intra-Russia shipping  totaled 517,000 t (9% of total volume), up 24 times mostly due to transportation of construction materials (484,000 tons) by DCV36, Neva-Leader, Rusich and Volzhsky vessels.

North-Western Shipping Company, part of VBTH, a shipping division of UCL Holding, is the largest carrier in the Russian system of waterways, specializing on the export and import shipping of bulk, general and project cargoes, towages of oversized cargo and craft.
