Metropolitan Plan for Great Newcastle endorses Port of Newcastle vision
The debut of the first-ever Metropolitan Plan for Greater Newcastle is a first for a non-capital city in Australia. The recent release of the Plan by the NSW government sets the framework for new investment and growth in job opportunities, housing, public spaces and transport. Importantly, it reflects the significant opportunities for economic prosperity and global connectivity within the Greater Newcastle area and beyond, the company said in its press release.
Port of Newcastle has an important role to play in supporting the key objectives of the Plan. The Port and its operations will be instrumental in attracting more businesses and skilled workers to the region. It will also work alongside the Hunter's expanding Airport to maximise commercial business opportunities, delivering greater imports, exports and tourism capital.
The Port will shortly release its own Port Master Plan, which provides a broad and strategic approach to future port developments and opportunities to 2040.
The Plan sets a vision for the Port and our region over the next 20 years and will be a key part of the Port's ongoing conversation with its customers, partners, government and the community.
Port of Newcastle's Master Plan 2040 highlights a suite of projects that also align with the goals of the Metropolitan Plan for Greater Newcastle, including:
the Newcastle Container Terminal;
the Newcastle Bulk Terminal;
an Automotive and Ro-Ro Hub;
the Maritime Precinct; and
the Newcastle Cruise Terminal.
As the global gateway for northern NSW, Port of Newcastle welcomes the opportunity to continue working with the NSW Government to implement the broader policy objectives and goals outlined in the Metropolitan Plan.
The release of the Port Master Plan 2040 will further highlight the strong alignment between the Port's vision, the Hunter Regional Plan and the Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan. All three plans provide a strategic blueprint for the region and underline significant investment opportunities that will support the prosperity and diversification of the Newcastle and Hunter economies into the future.
