Krasnoye Sormovo shipyard (a company of United Shipbuilding Corporation) will continue building dry cargo carriers of Project RSD59 for State Transport Leasing Company (STLC). According to the shipyard’s press release, Krasnoye Sormovo has won an open competition for construction of 11 ships by the end of 2021.
It will take three years to build the new series. The RSD59 ships are to be delivered by December 2019, four ships – by the end of 2020 with four more units expected by the end of 2021.
According to the statement, Krasnoye Sormovo shipyard was the only participant of the competition announced by STLC. The contract price is RUB 10.437 billion.
The competition was announced in late 2018 with initial contract price of RUB 10.67 billion (with 0% VAT). The source of financing is the federal budget subsidy and own resources of STLC.
That is the third series of RSD59 ships ordered by STLC to Krasnoye Sormovo. The first series of five ships was completed in October 2018, the second one numbering four units is under construction.
RSD59 ships of Volgo-Don Max class have two cargo holds and the maximum dimensions to sail along the Volga-Don canal.
The vessel is designed for transportation of general, containerized cargo, timber, grain, oversize cargo and dangerous goods of B Class in R2 navigation area with waves up to 3% and standing off a place of shelter within 100 miles (distance between shelters should not exceed 200 miles), inland waterways of Russia (with some restrictions).

Project RSD59 designer is Marine Engineering Bureau – Design SPb. Working design document was developed by Volga-Caspian Design Bureau.

In 2018, when we were building the series of five dry cargo carriers, the design was improved considerably - in the result, sea deadweight was increased by more than 600 tonnes”, said Mikhail Pershin, Acting General Director of Krasnoye Sormovo.
Krasnoye Sormovo PJSC is one of the oldest shipbuilding companies in Russia, founded in 1849. Throughout the 75-year period, more than three hundred submarines and rescue vehicles including 25 nuclear ones have been built and modernized by Krasnoye Sormovo shipyard. Today, Krasnoye Sormovo builds vessels of commercial fleet meeting the requirements of international conventions on reliability and safety. Some of Krasnoye Sormovo tankers are in the list of Significant Ships of the Year by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA).
United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC OJSC) is the largest shipbuilding company in Russia. It was set up in 2007 with 100% federal ownership.
