ABP partners with Grimsby-based Maritime Academy

Leading port operator, ABP announces that it will form an official partnership with local educational institution, Ormiston Maritime Academy based in Grimsby.

The project comes after ABP partnered with two schools in the Hull area last year, to raise awareness of the opportunities within the maritime sector and encourage young talent into the port industry.

As well as harnessing the chance to speak with pupils about the array of surprising and interesting careers available across the Humber ports, ABP and Ormiston Maritime Academy will also have the opportunity to share best practice.

A comprehensive pack of education-based projects has been presented to the Academy by ABP, which is keen to have regular communications with the pupils through practical learning, work experience opportunities, port tours and tailored assemblies.

Ashley Curnow, Port Manager for ABP in Grimsby said: “We have around 200 different jobs available at the company and it’s key that local children are aware of these fantastic opportunities on their doorstep.”

He continued: “We’re keen to spark their interest in the ports sector but we’re also excited at the prospect of getting a different perspective on our own methods by collaboratively working alongside the academy’s senior leadership team.”

Oasis Maritime Academy, formerly known as Hereford Technology School, was renamed in 2010 having been completely rebuilt on the same footprint. With state-of-the-art technology based in each classroom and a modern, welcoming feel throughout, the academy’s focus on maritime, made it an ideal partner for the port operators.

Kevin Gallacher, Principal at Ormiston Maritime Academy said: “Here at Ormiston Maritime Academy we pride ourselves on having a relentless focus on the whole child, whilst academic achievement is important, there are many other contributing factors to a childs’ future success. It is our belief that this approach helps support our young people to develop into well rounded confident individuals who are ready to make a positive impact on their community and lead happy, successful and fulfilling lives. We are determined to offer students the best possible opportunities available and working with ABP will enable us to do just that. Through this exciting partnership our students will have the chance to build up their confidence and develop their employability skills whilst working with one of the areas leading employers.”
