Annual cargo traffic through North-South corridor to achieve 17 million tonnes by mid-2020 and 30 million tonnes by 2030, IAA PortNews correspondent cites Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company Talybov, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, as saying at St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2019). According to him, the major role in servicing that cargo flow will be played by the rivers of Volga-Caspian and Volga-Don basins of inland water ways.
“We consider it important to involve in this corridor the entire Volga-Caspian and Volga-Don basins ... This canal provides for shipping of considerable volumes of cargo and our calculations were based on it when we were designing the route”, said the official.
