Russian ports to handle 90-95% of Russian cargo carried by sea – deputy Minister of Transport

By 2010, 90-95% of Russian cargo carried by sea should be handled by Russian ports. That is the task set up by Alexander Misharin, deputy Minister of Transport, at a scientific-training conference, Rosbalt reports. According to Misharin, the speed of cargo trains should grow by 15-20%, or even by 20-30% at main lines. In recent 5 years, volume of Russian export grew by 31%. Thus, loading of Russian cargo ports increased 3.5 times compared to early 1990-es. Misharin also says in 2006 Russian ports handled 14 million tons more compared to all USSR ports in 1989. Investments into port infrastructure should total RUR 690 billion, while government may invest only RUR 130 billion.

Container, oil and coal terminals are to be built in Murmansk which requires deep modernization of the railway to Murmansk. Heavy fuel oil terminal with annual capacity of 5 million tons should be built in Novorossijsk and a hub capable of competing with Shanghai and Pussan will be constructed in Nakhdka.

The capacity of a coal terminal in the port of Vanino (Far East) should be increased from 14 to 30 million tons per year. Besides, cargo fleet should be renovated, deputy minister says. Misharin also says he hopes that federal Law on Port will be adopted soon. Besides, he says the Ministry of Transport started working out draft law “On direct mixed combined transportation”.
