Hutchison Whampoa picked as preferred port operator in Brisbane
Hutchison Whampoa Ltd., the world's largest container port operator, was selected as the preferred bidder to run a terminal in Brisbane on growing global trade.
Hutchison's port unit was picked to operate two berths in the Port of Brisbane, Australia's third-busiest, Queensland Premier Peter Beattie said in an e-mailed statement today. Operations are expected to start as early as in mid-2012, he said.
Hutchison, PSA International Pte and other port operators have been building more berths worldwide to tap growth in global trade that is expected to reach 7.6 percent this year, according to the International Monetary Fund.
The Port of Brisbane handled 9.6 percent more containers in the July-December period, Beattithe statement said. It processed 6.67 million 20-foot standard containers in the financial year ended June 2006, an increase of 10 percent from a year earlier, according to the Containerisation International Web site.
Total container volume handled by Hutchison's port unit rose 15 percent last year, led by Shanghai and Yantian. Hutchison operates 257 berths in 45 ports in 23 countries.
