South African ports handled a total of 178.915 million tonnes of cargo during the financial year ended 31 March 2007 (179.535mt in 2005/06). This figure excludes the tonnage of containers handled which the National Ports Authority no longer records by weight.The figures reflected below include an estimated average container weight of 13.5 tonnes per TEU (a conservative estimate) and when taken into account the figure handled by South Africa’s seven ports becomes 225.97 million tonnes handled (2005/06 was 221.54Mt).
