Throughput of the port of St. Petersburg up 18% in Q1 07, y-o-y

In January-March 2007, the port of St. Petersburg handled 12 688.9 thou tons of cargo (+18%, year-on-year), Administration of the Sea Port of St. Petersburg reports. Over the reported period the port handled 1 897.6 thou tons of dry bulk cargo (+62%, year-on-year) including 174.2 thou tons of ore (+20%), 1 202.7 thou tons of mineral fertilizers (+36%), 520.7 thou tons of coal and coke (3.7-fold growth, year-on-year).  Transshipment of dry loose cargo (grain) totaled 124.9 thou tons (+33%), timber - 678.4 thou tons (-8%), general cargo - 3 270.5 thou tons (+6%), including 342.2 thou tons of ferrous metal (-8%), 488.7 thou tons of non-ferrous metal (-4%), 88.8 thou tons of metal scrap (+35%), 953.2 thou tons of packaged cargo (+14%), 413.0 thou tons of refrigerated cargo (+16%) and 3 926.6 thou tons of other general cargo (+22%). Transshipment of containers grew by 12% to 387 822 thou tons (2 790.82 789.7 thou tons (+13%). Transshipment of oil products amounted to 1.1 thou tons (17.6-fold decrease, year-on-year), oil - 2 789.7 thou tons (+13%). In January-March 2007 the port handled 3050 vessels.

Port of Saint Petersburg is located on the islands in the mouth of the Neva-river, in the Neva Bay at the eastern side of the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea). The Big Port of Saint Petersburg includes the mouth of the Neva-river, the Neva Bay, Kronshtadt and the complex of structures protecting Saint Petersburg from flood (the dam). Icebreaker assistance is carried out within winter navigation.

In 2005 the port’s cargo turnover amounted to 4282.2 thou tons. According to the Administration of the Sea Port of Saint Petersburg, about 30 stevedoring companies are engaged in transshipment of cargo in the port.
