New port proposed in the Caspian

Kazakhstan has plans to build a new port on its Caspian coast so crude oil cargoes can be taken from its Kashagan oil field across the Caspian Sea to the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline.

The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline carries oil 1,776 kilometres (km) overland from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.

The pipeline starts at Azerbaijan's capital Baku on the Caspian coast and ends at Turkey's Mediterranean port of Ceyhan.

Reports say that the location of the port has been planned south of Kazakhstan's coastal town of Aktau.

Kazakhstan's Deputy Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bolat Akchulakov said that construction and capacity of the proposed port would be decided after Kazakhstan concludes discussions over its share of oil shipments through the BP-operated pipeline.

Kazakhstan's state-owned oil and gas company KazMunaiGaz had also earlier announced plans to develop a trans-Caspian oil transport system.

According to KazMunaiGaz western division head, Mahambet Batyrbayev, a $1.6 billion project including terminals, a pipeline and designated tankers is scheduled to be in operation by 2010.

The offshore Kashagan oilfield is also scheduled to come on-stream in 2010.

Earlier this year an official from Petroles de la France (Total)
, one of the international oil companies participating in Kashagan development, said that the consortium was prepared to spend up to $4 billion on Kazakh-Caspian transportation systems.
