Shanghai Oct container throughput up 20.3 pct yr-on-yr at 1.91 mln TEUs

Container throughput at China's largest port totaled 1.91 mln twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in October, up 20.3 pct year-on-year, the Shanghai Port & Shipping Administration Bureau said.
The administration said in a statement that in the first ten months, container throughput was up 19.8 pct at 17.87 mln TEUs.
Cargo turnover increased 22.4 pct in the 10-month period to 446.55 mln tons, with cargo handled for both export and import rising 14 pct to 175.32 mln tons.
In October, cargo turnover was up 8.6 pct year-on-year at 44.79 mln tons.
The China Securities Journal reported today the Development II of Shanghai's new Yangshan deepwater port is expected to start operations by the end of the year.
Investors for the four-berth second phase, with a total annual capacity of 2.5 mln TEUs, include Hutchison Whampoa and AP Moeller-Maersk.
