Both Hamburg Süd and Maersk Line have seen sharp increases in the volume of reefer products carried, particularly in 2004 and last year following the introduction of larger vessels. Both increased their reefer liftings by almost 200,000 tonnes in those two years.
In comparison, NYKLauritzenCool, the largest traditional reefer carrier, has seen its share of the business slide from 18.3% in 2000 to 10.4% in 2005, according to the research.
Hamburg Süd is reported to be planning to introduce 3,800 teu vessels on the trade next year and Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co have told ports to prepare for vessels of more than 4,000 teu in the medium term.
NYKLauritzenCool’s regional container manager, Mauricio Padron, says the company is looking at investing in new specially designed vessels that would increase its ability to move containers while maintaining its focus on traditional cargoes.
