Cargo turnover of Yuzhny port (Ukraine) grew 1.2% in January-October 2006 to 17 194.7 thou tons, the port’s press center told PortNews IAA. Within ten months the port handled 11 548.5 thou tons of cargo (-0.6% against year-on-year result). In October cargo turnover of the port totaled 1 711.9 thou tons (-13.2% against October 2005). In October the port handled 1 141.9 thou tons of cargo (-18.1%).
Yuzhny port is located at the north-western coast of the Black Sea, in ice-free Maly Adzhalyksky (Grigorievsky) estuary, 30 km from Odessa port. The port is capable of handling up to 15 million tons of cargo per year. Major directions of transportation are the basins of the Black and Mediterranean Seas, Latin America, USA, Middle East, South-East Asia. The majority of transit cargo (90%) come from Russia, Moldavia, Kazakhstan and Byelorussia.
