Cargo turnover of the port of Saint Petersburg down 7.1% in Jan.-Oct. 06

Cargo turnover of the port of Saint Petersburg totaled 44 801 thou tons in January-October 2006 (-7.1% against year-on-year result), Administration of the Seaport of Saint Petersburg reports. Tarn of oil products amounted over the reported period to 10 920.5 thou tons (-19.6% against January-October 2005), metal - 5 330.3 thou tons (-28.6%), timber - 2 286 thou tons (-24.1%). Container transshipment grew by 20.7% to 12 544.1 thou tons. The port handled 2 824.9 thou tons of refrigerator cargo (+4%), 4 225 thou tons of chemical cargo (-32.3%), 86.2 thou tons of food-stuff (-59.1%). Transshipment of general cargo totaled 1 651.6 thou tons (+13.5%). Transshipment of coal and ore decreased to 1 888.4 thou tons (-32.3%), grain – grew to 361.5 thou tons (+2.4%). Transshipment of dry bulk cargo grew 37-fold to 105.7 thou tons. Over the reported period the port handled 2 560.8 thou tons of metal scrap (in January-October 2005 transshipment of metal scrap was not carried out).

The port of Saint Petersburg (the Gulf of Finland) is the largest port in the North-West of Russia. In 2005, the port’s cargo turnover totaled 57.482 million tons (+12.3%, year-on-year). 30 stevedoring companies carry out cargo transshipment at the territory of Saint Petersburg port.
