The Chinese port city of Qingdao in the mainland province of Shandong handled 20.02 million tons of cargo in October, an increase of 22.3 per cent over the same month a year ago, Xinhua News Agency reports.The news agency said this marked the first time in the port's history that its monthly cargo throughput volume surpassed the 20 million-ton level. The foreign import and export trade contributed 15.6 million tons of cargo to the total volume of goods handled by the port in October, up 29.7 per cent year on year. During the first 10 months of the year, the port of Qingdao lifted 6.34 million TEU, which the state media said is already 40,000 TEU more than the total container throughput recorded for the whole of 2005.
The year-to-date volume of cargo handled by the port has grown to 187.22 million tons, which also exceeds the total volume of cargo handled in 2005.
