Throughput of Kaliningrad Commercial Seaport up 6% to 2.635 million tonnes in H1 08
In January-June, 2008, Kaliningrad Commercial Seaport handled 2.635 million tonnes of cargo (+6%, year-on-year), the port informs. In the reported period, transshipment of export cargo amounted to 2.019 million tonnes (+5%, year-on-year) including 177,400 tonnes of heavy fuel oil (-26%, year-on-year), rolled metal - 572,200 tonnes (-19%, year-on-year), coal and coke - 510,200 (up over two-fold), cast iron - 362,600 tonnes (+12.5%), timber - 39,700 tonnes (+17.5%).
Transshipment of import cargo totaled 615,100 tonnes (+10.3%).
Kaliningrad is the western-most port of Russia, located at the South-Eastern part of the Baltic Sea at the mouth of Pregolia river. The port with the round-the-year navigation is connected with the sea by Kaliningrad Marine Canal. The port has 20 berths with total length exceeding 3 kilometers. The depth at 18 cargo berths is from 8 to 9 meters. The port is capable of handling coal, coke, ore, metal, ferrous alloys, scrap metal, grain, sugar, fertilizers (dry and liquid), containers, timber, foodstuffs, refrigerated cargo, paper, cellulose.
