Maersk and PSA win container terminal licences for north Morocco
Moroccan port authorities have granted licences to two shipping consortiums in a bid from the government to revive the country's underdeveloped north, Reuters reports.
The Mediterranean Special Agency, Morocco's main port agency, said the Danish-led consortium of AP Moller-Maersk which includes Moroccan conglomerate Akwa Group, was awarded Terminal 3 of Tangier Med with its capacity of 3 million TEU.
Singapore's state-owned PSA International consortium were granted Terminal 4 with its capacity of 2 million TEUs. The group includes Moroccan state maritime firm Marsa Maroc and SNI, an investment company controlled by Morocco's royal family.
The Maersk-led consortium plans to handle 8 million TEU by 2013 and position Tangier Africa's as its biggest port complex, said the company.
