Letter of intent signed for Rotterdam’s Container Transferium
On July 4th, twelve companies and the Port of Rotterdam Authority signed a letter of intent concerning possible participation in the Container Transferium.
The planned location is in Alblasserdam, about 50 km from the Maasvlakte. The 17 hectare site is situated on the River Noord at an intersection point with inland waterways and rail.
The Port of Rotterdam Authority is the initiator, but the Container Transferium will eventually be operated by the businesses community.
The financial investment is expected to run into tens of millions of euros.
The following companies signed the LOI: BCTN (operator of four Dutch inland shipping terminals); Kloosterboer (stevedores); UCT (empty container depots); DHL Global Forwarding; five shipping companies - Hapag-Lloyd, Evergreen, Maersk Line, MOL and APL, and terminal operators APM, ECT and RWG.
The decision as to whether to participate in the operation of the Transferium will be taken based on the business model that will now be developed.
At the Container Transferium, trucks will load and unload containers that would otherwise have been transported to and from the sea terminals on the Maasvlakte via the A15. Inland vessels will then ensure frequent connections to the big container terminals on the western end of the port.
There is room for a number of services on and around the handling centre, such as "empties" depots and distribution centres. Customs and other government organisations can also carry out their inspection work efficiently on the site. The Port Community System by Port infolink ensures that the electronic communication between all the parties functions smoothly.
