Naval exercise Northern Eagle 2008 starts in Barents Sea
The Russian-US joint exercise Northern Eagle 2008 with the participation of the Norwegian Navy begins in the Barents Sea Monday, Itar-Tass reports.
Taking part in the five-day exercise are a Russian big anti-submarine ship Severomorsk, a US missile frigate Elrod, ships of the Norwegian coastal guard service, the aircraft of the Russian Northern Fleet and carrier-based aircraft of the partners.
The program of the exercise envisages joint operations in the field of navigation control, inspection of suspicious ships, search and rescue operations at sea, use of the aircraft and communications. One of the tasks of the exercises is prevention of terrorism, the same source said.
