The bureau indicated the total number of containers handled by the southern Taiwan port in October reached 823,270 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), an increase of 5.35 percent over October 2005.
Bureau officials said workers at Kaohsiung Port are elated at the increase after concerns were raised with statistics compiled by International Container Review magazine in June, showing that Kaohsiung Port was the only one out of the world's top 20 ports to register a decrease in container handling, and was likely to lose its status as the world's sixth largest port.
