NOL said in a statement it carried the equivalent of 192,800 40-foot containers on its ships in the period, down from 208,200 a year earlier. The year-on-year decline was the smallest so far in 2009, amid signs of a global economic recovery.
"The decrease in volume was due to the decline in demand on nearly all major trade lanes, partially offset by improvement in intra-Asia trade volumes," the firm said in the statement.
The average revenue from each container fell 30 percent from a year ago to $2,189. The revenue per container was also slightly lower than the $2,219 recorded for the preceding four-week period ended July 24.
