Throughput of Latvian seaports up 0.6% to 42.7 mln t in Jan-Aug 09

In January-August 2009, the ports of Latvia handled 42.70 mln t of cargo (+0.6%, year-on-year). The growth was driven by the port of Riga, the throughput of which increased by 3.5%, year-on-year, while the ports of Ventspils and Liepaja decreased their throughputs, The Baltic Course reports.

In the reported period, transshipment of liquid bulk cargo increased by 8.3% to 17.80 million tonnes including 16.57 million tonnes of oil products (+16.9%), while transshipment of crude oil fell by 53.9% to 0.58 million tonnes. Transshipment of dry bulk cargo grew by 1.8% to 19.82 million tonnes. Coal transshipment increased by 18.7% to 13.93 million tonnes, mineral fertilizers – fell by 33.9% to 1.98 million tonnes.

In the sector of general cargo transshipment of containers fell by 23.6% to 118,542 TEU, ro-ro cargo – by 13.3% to 1.19 million tonnes, timber – by 24.5% to 2.02 million tonnes, metal and scrap metal – by 18.9% to 0.34 million tonnes.   

Total throughput of Riga port amounted to 20.09 million tonnes in January-August 09 (+ 3.5%) including 13.04 million tonnes of dry loose cargo (+2.8%) with coal accounting for 10.10 million tonnes (+ 14.3%), mineral fertilizers – 1.27 million tonnes (- 1.8%).  Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo (mainly oil products) amounted to 4.41 million tonnes (+ 31.4%). Throughput of general cargo fell by 21.6% with containers accounting for 117,483 TEU (-15.5%).

The port of Ventspils handled 19.09 million tonnes of cargo (-0.9%). Transshipment of dry loose cargo totaled 5.18 million tonnes (- 3.3%) including 3.79 million tonnes of coal (+ 32.3%), 0.70 million tonnes of mineral fertilizers (- 57.0%). Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo (mainly oil products) amounted to 11.98 million tonnes (+14.5%), crude oil – 0.45 million tonnes (- 56.9%). The volume of general cargo fell by 36.9% to 0.94 million tonnes including 380 TEU of containers (- 97.0%).

The port of Liepaja handled 2.72 million tonnes of cargo (- 6.4%). Transshipment of dry loose cargo (mainly grain) amounted to 1.25 million tonnes (+ 7.1%), liquid bulk cargo – 0.41 million tonnes (- 38.6%) including 0.20 million tonnes of oil products (- 50.3%). Turnover of general cargo totaled 1.05 million tonnes (- 0.5%) including 679 TEU of containerized cargo (- 83.7%), 0.32 million tonnes of metal and scrap metal (-17.0%). 

Minor ports of Latvia handled 803,900 tonnes of cargo in the 8-month period of 2009.
