Since 1984 St. Petersburg is a so-called 'sister city' of Rotterdam - a relationship aiming to strengthen economical and social-cultural developments of the city and its inhabitants.
Both the port of St. Petersburg and the port of Rotterdam are very important for each other. A lot of the export from St. Petersburg is shipped via Rotterdam. Like Rotterdam St. Petersburg is an important container port. Half the total number of Russian export containers are shipped from the port of St. Petersburg. Most import containers for Russia enter the country via St. Petersburg. For the greater St. Petersburg area, including Ust-Luga, Vysotsk and Primorsk, Rotterdam is an important destination of Russian exported liquid bulk.
During the upcoming visit the Rotterdam delegation, including representatives of port related companies, will host the business event 'The St. Petersburg - Rotterdam Connection'. In several presentations the latest and future developments in the port of Rotterdam, including the commercial benefits of doing business with the Rotterdam port logistics, industrial and trade circles, will be highlighted.
These presentations will be delivered by not only mayor Mr. Aboutaleb, but also by Mr. Wim van Sluis, chairman of the Rotterdam Port Promotion Council and chairman of the Rotterdam Port Industries' Association Deltalinqs, Mr. Jos van der Vegt, chairman of the Rotterdam Chamber of Commerce, and by Mr. Bas Hennissen, director Industry and Bulk Cargo Port of Rotterdam.
The Rotterdam delegation will also visit NEVA 2009, the 10th international shipping, shipbuilding, ports and offshore energy exhibition, in the Lenexpo exhibition complex. At this exhibition Mayor Mr. Aboutaleb will officially open the Holland Marine House Russia. This office is located in St. Petersburg and will represent the Dutch maritime industry on the Russian market and will intensify the partnership between the Dutch and Russian maritime sectors.
