Klaipeda seaport cargo turnover (Lithuania) down by 9.6% in Jan-Nov, 2009

Klaipeda seaport cargo turnover (Lithuania) decreased by 9.6% (to 25 mln 43 thou 414.4 tons) in January-November, 2009 as compared to the corresponding period of 2008, reported the port’s administration. The volume of liquid cargo transhipment went down by 4.9% (to 9 mln 530 thou 425.6 tons) In the reporting period, bulk cargo transhipment decreased by 5.4% (to 8 mln 569 thou 143.7 tons), volume of general cargo handled reduced by 19.5% (to 6 mln 943 thou 845.1 tons).

Container turnover of the port fell by 35.7% (to 222 thou 626 TEU) within the reporting period against the corresponding period of the previous year. In January-November, 2009 Butinge terminal transhipped 7 mln 819 thou 431.2 tons of crude oil (- 5.4% year-on-year).

Klaipeda Seaport is the northernmost ice-free port on the Eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. It is the largest transportation center of the Republic of Lithuania. 17 large stevedoring companies, ship - repair and shipbuilding yards operate within the port and all marine business and cargo handling services are being rendered. The annual port cargo handling capacity is up to 40 million tons of various cargoes.
