Kaohsiung Port to build a 38.8-hectare zone

Kaohsiung Port Administration recently kicked off a land development project, the largest of its kind in a decade, to build a 38.8-hectare zone as a delivery hub and a free trade port. To that end, the administration will requisition a land space owned by Tang Eng Iron Works Co, reported Taiwan Econoomic News.
The port administration said it will lure three firms, including Hon Hai Precision Industry, Wan Hai Marine Transport Co. and Hong Kong-based Orient Overseas International Limited, to station in the proposed free trade port.
Of the three above-mentioned firms, Hon Hai has expressed keen interest in setting up a goods delivery center to handle the processed goods shipped across the Taiwan Strait.
In the beginning of 2010, the administration will negotiate with Wan Hai and Orient Overseas about the size of land space they need in the proposed free trade port zone. It is estimated both Wan Hai and Orient Overseas will lease a land area of 23 hectares combined in the prospective zone.
In 2013, Kaohsiung Port Administration will reclaim a land plot of 50 hectares beside the No. 6 container center and include the reclaimed land space in the free trade port, so as to transform the Kaohsiung Port into a large-sized logistics port.
Kaohsiung handled 7.75 million TEUs in the first 10 months of 2009. It is expected the port can hardly catch up with the 9.67 million TEUs registered in the entire year of 2008.
An industry insider said the poor performance of the Kaohsiung port in 2009 can be attributed to the impact of the global financial tsunami.
M H Hsieh, director of Kaohsiung Port Administration, noted the only way to resuscitate the port is to develop a free trade port zone at the port.
