Its five-year plan is to increase its market share in the North-European range up to nine per cent in 2015 by the upgrading of the Downstream Rapid Turnaround Port and complete Port 2000 with the capacity of six million TEU by 2015.
The aim is to increase the proportion of consolidated rail, waterway and coastal shipping transport and widen the hinterland to move 25 per cent of cargo by consolidated modes by 2020.
It plans to establish an industrial consolidation system, through stages and partnership, making it possible to group together rail and river cargo flows to the terminals. The multimodal yard - whose coming-on-stream of the first phase should take place by 2012.
Several projects completed or underway include the Reseau Ferre de France reactivation of the Motteville-Monterollier/Buchy line in 2008 at a cost of EUR50 million. The three-year project to update and electrify a 36-kilometre section of track has opened freight trains coming from the Port of Le Havre to reach the East of France and Germany without passing through the Paris region, and to travel north towards the Benelux countries without interrupting haulage.
In bypassing the Paris region by the north-east freight artery and diverting part of the traffic from the Rouen rail junction, which is already experiencing high traffic, worked to strengthen the reliability of the Le Havre-Paris connection to run up to 30 trains a day.
The cooperation agreement between Le Havre port and Germany's Duisburg port to encourage transport connections and to intensify intermodal exchanges between the two in 2008 has created the 'Atlantica' project, centring on a maritime connection between Le Havre Port and the Iberian peninsula (Vigo and Algesiras) jointly launched by France and Spain should come into service by 2010 and develop up to three return services per week. This route is in line with the European policy of the Transport Trans-European Networks (TEN-T).
In the port handled 1.1 million TEU in the first half of 2008, eight per cent drop year on year, said the port authority statement.
