Russian customs office to tighten control on Russian-Latvian border

The Russian customs service (FCS) is considering the possibility of strengthening control at the customs check points and elevating service to medium security at the Russian-Latvian border, the FCS press release reads. The FCS authorities are planning to involve available personnel reserves and to apply all customs facilities. Such measures will be undertaken in "a case of complication of the situation" with Latvian smuggled cargo carriers.

According to the FCS press release, tightening of customs control on the Russian border is not based on political grounds. "Absence of positive dynamics, both regarding prevention of infringements, and compensation of the caused damage, make strengthening of the customs control quite predictable and unique measure possible to change the developing situation", the FCS press release reads.

To remind, the Russian customs service has announced recently it intends to tighten customs control of the goods delivered through the state border by the Latvian truckers in connection with large debts to the Russian budget and growing number of criminal schemes while moving goods through the Russian-Latvian border.
