BDI is an index reflecting changes of cost of sea transportation of raw materials – metal, iron ore, coal, and also grain. The index includes other three value indexes of the freight cost, that differ from each other by the vessel size - Capesize, Supramax and Panamax. Dynamics of BDI changes allows investors and participants of the market to analyze the basic tendencies of a world supply and demand. Frequently the index is considered as the basic indicator of the future economic growth (if the index grows) or recessions (if it falls) as the raw materials which determine the index, are not appropriate for speculative operations.
