Brazilian mining company MMX to build port in Chile

Brazilian mining company MMX has received authorization from the Chilean government and navy to build a port for iron exports in Copiapo, a city in Chile’s Atacama region, the press reported Monday. The port will help improve logistics for MMX’s mining project in the region, the Brazilian company said in a filing with securities regulators.
Preliminary work on the site is already under way and environmental permits are being obtained for the mining project, MMX said.
The iron reserves acquired in the Chilean region in September 2008 are “significant,” the mining company said.
MMX paid small mine operators $53.5 million for 1,760 hectares (4,345 acres) adjacent to reserves located about 90 kilometers (56 miles) from Copiapo and 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the coast.
