Nornikel opens its logistics office in Rotterdam

Norilsk Nickel LLC opened late November its Norilsk Nickel Logistics BV office in Rotterdam. The Company office under the contract for supply of the equipment for the European Polar ensured accomplishment of cargo handling and loading on Arctic container ship "Talnakh. The ship delivered to a European port export cargo of Norilsk Nickel and on its way back will deliver equipment to Dudinka, the company press service reported earlier.
The opening of MSP Norilsk Nickel logistics office in Rotterdam was important to further the development of commodity and transportation logistics of the company and to improve its economic efficiency, company press release reads.
As a result of redistribution of the Arctic coastal shipment by its own fleet of five diesel-electric ships, the company found it possible in 2009 to organize direct transshipment of export cargo from Dudinsky sea port to Europe. Having performed in less than a year, nine sea freights to Rotterdam and Hamburg, container ships have delivered 137 thousand tons export commodity metals of Norilsk Nickel and 2.5 thousand tons of import cargoes for the company.
Now with its own office in Europe, Norilsk Nickel Company has planned to improve the quality of services of the existing traffic and to attract additional loading capacities of the company's own vessels towards Murmansk, Arkhangelsk and Dudinka.
According to the company the establishment and development of its own terminal at Murmansk port of Murmansk transport unit Branch of MMC Norilsk Nickel meets the strategic objectives. In 2009, more than 44 thousand tons of the company’s cargoes were handled at the existing capacity with no additional cost. Meanwhile, Norilsk Nickel’s container ships did not use the icebreakers services in coastal voyages in the Arctic towards Dudinskaya.
The results of this year navigation showed high efficiency of Arctic transport fleet of Norilsk Nickel Sergei Buzov, deputy general director, freight and transport logistics manager was quoted as saying. The company has planned to keep the same rate of freight turnover for the next year on route Dudinka-Europe as well as to Murmansk, he added.
