Nornikel to invest 1.1 billion rubles in the construction of a sea terminal in Murmansk next year

The Norilsk Nickel Group has allocated 1.1 billion rubles for 2010 for the construction of a sea terminal in Murmansk. On the territory at about 10 hectares the company is planning to build a sea terminal for transshipment of general cargo and cargo containers to supply Norilsk Plant (shipment of cargo to ensure the company's operation and needs of the residents of Norilsk, as well as export of products of "Norilsk Nickel"), save the shipment of coal, "PortNews" agency reports citing the Nornikel press service.

According to IAA "PortNews" earlier reports, back in 2005 Nornikel closed a deal on acquisition of Murmansk dockyard’s territory and adjacent land. Now this territory is included in the boundaries of the seaport of Murmansk. The territory of the planned terminal is connected by rail to the station of Murmansk, has two offshore berths (owned by "Norilsk Nickel") of total length 311 m and 147 m and depths from 7 to 10 meters. The sea berths can accommodate vessels with deadweight of up to 20 tons. The marine terminal construction project in this area was developed and passed all procedure in 2006. The design capacity of the terminal at the time was expected at 1.5 million tons per year. Then the project was suspended and resumed now.

The construction of the terminal, Nornikel authorities noted, would last 22 months. The project includes complete replacement of all engineering facilities and services to the existing port areas, construction of shunting railway routes connecting the two sites and equipment of new warehouse areas.

The new draft of the terminal is designed for a capacity of 700 thousand tons of cargo a year. It is planned to use one berth (147 m with depths of 10.5 m), which is ready for operation. Since August 2009 the vessels are being handled at the berth in test mode. By December 2009 more than 40 tons of Nornikel’s own goods have been handled at the dock. At least 130 thousand tons are said to be transshipped next year, the company said. Two mobile "Lighter" cranes, purchased by Nornikel, have been reportedly delivered at the terminal territory from the port of Dudinka. Their installation will be completed by March-April 2010, the company said.

Besides, a check point is to be established in future at the Nornikel Terminal. The company said, it would be registering relevant documents in 2010. The Nornikel Group does not have a stevedore operator for service at the terminal. All operations of loading and unloading of ships are carried out by a port brunch of Murmansk transport unit branch of "Norilsk Nickel" Group.
