Cargo turnover of the Big Port of St. Petersburg may decline in 2009 to 16,5% - to 50 million tons

Turnover of the Big Port of St. Petersburg in 2009 will amount to more than 50 million tons, IAA "PortNews correspondent reports citing Peter Parinov, the captain of the Big Port of St. Petersburg speaking recently at a press conference.
In 2008 the port had cargo turnover, to remind, at 59.945 million tons, thus the fall in 2009 will be at about 16.5%.

For recent eleven months of 2009 throughput at the Big Port of St. Petersburg has reduced 27% in comparison with the rate of 2008 to  - at 46 million 583,8 thousand tons. Besides, Mr. Parinov says, the volume of handled bulk cargo has declined by 22% - up to 7 million 82.2 thousand tons, general cargo - 21%, to 10 million 747 thousand tons, the port container turnover has fallen 25% - down to 1 million 213.271 TEUs. However, the port has seen growth in transshipment of bulk cargo (+5%), nonferrous metals (+28%) and coal (13%).

Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands of the delta of the Neva river, in the Neva Bay, the eastern tip of the Gulf of Finland. The Big Port of St. Petersburg embraces the Neva River delta and the Neva Bay, Kronstadt and the dam, complex of protective structures of St. Petersburg. During winter navigation Icebreakers are piloting vessels to and out the harbor. The port authorities said there were at least 30 stevedoring companies currently operating at the port of St. Petersburg.
