Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), second largest container carrier in the world, have announced changes to their Golden Gate service. The Port of Charleston has been added to the port rotation for the service which now reads: Shanghai, Ningbo, Chiwan, Yantian, Singapore, Salalah, Suez Canal transit, New York, Baltimore, Norfolk, Charleston, Freeport (Bahamas), Suez Canal transit, Jeddah, Colombo, Singapore, Chiwan, Hong Kong.
The revised service schedule will commence on 15th January 2010 with the Shanghai departure of the MSC Turchia (voyage number F1002A). Local office details can, as always be obtained through the MSC website. The Golden Gate route employs twelve MSC container vessels of 6050 TEU capacity.
Another change means that as from Christmas Eve 2009 the Golden Gate Pendulum service through Colombo is via the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) of Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) who predict around 1800 moves per weekly sailing. The container terminal, established as part of the Colombo Port Expansion Project saw the inaugural sailing via the new facility on the 24th December with the loading of the MSC Alessia. The event was celebrated on board with the presentation of a commemorative plaque.
MSC have also announced a general rate increase on their Northern Europe/African services applicable to all NWC/UK/Scandinavia Countries including Portugal and Ireland to all South African, Namibian and Mozambique Main MSC ports. The change will take effect from the 1st January 2010 and will mean an extra $200 per TEU and $400 per FEU.
