Yangshan Port's 2nd phase ready

THE second phase of construction on Shanghai Yangshan Deep Water Port has passed checks and will open on its first anniversary, --- the beginning of next month, Jiefang Daily reported today. In total, 38 container cranes have been set up to prepare for the trial. With four berths added alongside the 1.4-kilometer coast line, the second phase is expected to expand the port's annual capacity to another 2 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). By 2010, Yangshan Port will be able to handle 15 million TEUs annually, with its coastline reaching 10 kilometers. uring its first year of operation, Yangshan Port will have handled 3 million containers.
The port processed 17,880 containers yesterday and has accomplished a traffic volume of 2.68 million containers since the first phase of the port was put into use.
The port, located on an island at the mouth of Hangzhou Bay, 27.5 kilometers from the city's Luchaogang area in Nanhui District, will help Shanghai secure its role as an important shipping hub around the world. Featuring an average water depth of 15.5 meters, the port allows Shanghai to attract the world's biggest container ships, even those carrying 8,500 units. ith the support of Yangshan port, Shanghai port handled 17.87 million containers in the first ten months of the year, up 19.8 percent from a year ago, and is expected to see traffic of more than 20 million containers this year.
The number of cargo ships reached 2,173 monthly and their routes covered more than 300 ports around the world, which put Shanghai Port on the top of the mainland's port list. The further construction of Shanghai Port will promote the development of ports in the Yangtze Delta region, which account for 40 percent of the country's annual total.
