To avoid jams, NCR to freeze shipments for Novorossiysk Terminal

The North-Caucasian Railway (North-Caucasian branch of Russian Railways, RZD JSC) said it had to apply to the RZD authorities to suspend all loading operations with grain bulk transported to the Novorossiysk Grain Terminal (NZT), "Gudok" newspaper reports citing NCR logistics center’s chief Roman Babkin.

While the freeze proposal is pending, NCR had canceled since January 18 new applications for loading of grain for the NGT, continuing previously contracted services.

If the proposal is not accepted soon, the NCR said, the railroad will have to handle according to current plan at least some 2000 cars.

"The NGT Authority should have initiated the grain handling freeze at their terminal to prevent these grain cargo volumes that had led to the current jams at the port ", Roman Babkin said.

According to the newspaper, the delays have amounted to 2500 grain laden cars reported idle at the Novorossiysk station access road. 37 trains are said to be stuck at NCR’s intermediate stations. The road’s daily capacity allows handling 180-200 wagons. However, the authorities’ January report shows there were only 140 cares handled a day. The volumes drop was due to bad weather and irregular ship calls at the port. The NC Railway said the discharge loss for January totaled 1.300 cars.
