January throughput in Arkhangelsk port down by 17.3%, 193.400 tons this year

Freight volumes through the port of Arkhangelsk decreased by 17.3% in January 2010 compared with the same period of previous year, to 193.4 thousand tons, "PortNews" IAA reports citing the Port Authority. A larger 63.4 percent drop in coastal traffics volumes added to the overall decline. Volumes of crude oil shipments fell 7 times down over the same period of 2009, to 17.2 thousand tons.

At the same time, the exports volume was as much as 2.8 times, to 86.7 thousand tons and inbound commodities, largely general cargoes rose 20.1% to 46.7 thousand tons. The outbound volumes include coal, 44.9 thousand tones, petroleum products (20.3 thousand tones) and timber (18.000 tones).

Port of Arkhangelsk is located in the delta of Northern Dvina River, which flows into the White Sea. Arkhangelsk port is navigable the whole year round. The Northern Sea Route passes through the port. The Arkhangelsk seaport handles different categories of commodity ranging from general cargoes, cellulose, cardboard, containers, timber, metals, fertilizers, heavy equipment and bulked cargoes. The Arkhangelsk port capacities allow handling up to 4.5 million tons of cargo annually. Freight traffics via the port of Arkhangelsk in 2009 fell 30.58% year-over-year, to 3 million 271.6 thousand tons.
