Throughput of Astrakhan Railroad up 84%, up to 571.000 tons

Overall volume of handled cargoes by the Astrakhan branch of the Volga Railroad (PRZD, of Russian Railways) in January 2010 rose to 571.400 tons or a year-over-year 84.3 percent surge. In the reported period the AR handled some 10.000 cars at its facilities. The numbers include more than 250.000 tons of petroleum products, up 14% from the previous year, the AR press office reported.

Since the beginning of this year, the Astrakhan gas processing plant increased its processing volumes and resumed shipments of condensate.

Volgograd Region steelworks demand increased this January for scraps, and, accordingly, the Astrakhan Railroad had a 79% jump in volumes of loaded scrap metal from its stations or 4.390 tones (77 rail cars).

Shipments of chemicals and soda (sulfur) rose 10 times compared with last year's figures thanks to stable prices for this type of cargo in the world market. The railroad also exported to Tunisia, Israel and Morocco more than 231.000 tons (3 400 cars).

In January the volumes of industrial raw materials (halite and gypsum stone) rose 52% and salt by12%.
