According to Tarja Halonen, the main objective of this forum will be the adoption by the participants of specific commitments to improve the health of the Baltic Sea marine environment in the framework of the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) Plan of Action for the Baltic Sea. "It is important to set ambitious goals for cooperation. We have made significant progress in dismantling the barriers between countries and now must go further,” the Finland’s President was quoted as saying.
According to Tarja Halonen, the Finnish government has already announced its commitment, the first of which was the convening of this forum. The basic idea of the summit, she said, is the public-private partnership to combine efforts, adding that the countries have a common problem that must be solved.
The Baltic Sea Action-2010 summit opened today in Helsinki. The event is to accelerate the implementation of the “Action Plan for the Baltic Sea”, developed by experts of the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM), representing 9 countries of the region and the EU. The plan was adopted by the countries, members of HELCOM in 2007 as a "road map" to save the Baltic Sea.
