In December 2008, Russia and Finland agreed on the contract to extend the lease of the Russia’s part of Saimaa Canal. The 50-year-lease term will cost 1.200.000 euros a year. The agreement is to promote cooperation between the two countries in the field of transportation, trade and tourism. It will ensure smooth navigation along the Saimaa Canal and improve its competitiveness.
Saimaa navigable canal connecting the territory of Finland and Russia is located on the Karelian Isthmus. Canal links Saimaa chain of lakes near the city of Lappeenranta with the Gulf of Finland in the vicinity of the city of Vyborg (Leningrad region). The 43-km-length canal with several gateways was built back in 1845-1856 and reconstructed in 1968. It is navigable for for river and lake ships.
