Large oil spill in the Bay of Avachinskaya, responsible to be charged

Bunker fuel spill polluted 4.5 hectares of water area near Vilyuchinsk (Kamchatka region). The Russian Ministry of Defense units who continue cleaning up the aftermath. They have collected 200 cubic meters of debris, said the Far East Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources (RosPrirodNadzor).

Currently the Rosprirodnadzor and regional Prosecutor's office team investigating into the incident is establishing those responsible, as well as Transit-SE, the owner of "Slavyanka Bay” tanker, involved in the accident, the agency statement said.

The F-5 heavy fuel oil spill occurred on February 9, while the discharge of “Slavyanka Bay” ship. The ship’s captain blamed a strong wind that had caused the pipe breach. The diesel fuel started pouring from the pipe and leaked into the sea. According to preliminary data, as a result some 4 tons of fuel oil polluted the Avachinskaya Bay waters.

On February 10 an inspectors operational team of the Kamchatka RosPrirodNadzor Agency was establish in the incident area the extent of environmental damage. Their expertise has been turned over to the regional Emergency Ministry.
