Freight traffic by NWS down 16%, at 6 million tons

Volume of freight shipments by the North-West Shipping Company (NWS) in 2009 totaled 6 million tons, a 16 percent drop from 2008. The company transported in 2009 671.000 passengers, 2% more over the previous year. Despite the decline in freight traffic, the company ended up the fiscal year without loss, the EWS press office reported.

The economic crisis caused a 2009 cut in the company fleet in the first quarter (Q1 09) and ensued shipping traffic drop. The company overcame a reduction trend in total freight volumes in the middle of the year, but in late Q4, 2009 had managed to increase the volume of traffic.

Export shipments increased by 10.4% and amounted to 3.3 million tons while imports dropped by 37%, to 0.5 million tons. Transportation between foreign ports totaled 2.1 million tones (- 11.5%).

The company’s statistics show a cutback in scrap metal volumes, at 0.5 million tones (-18%), fertilizers - to 0.8 million tones (-29%). Transportation of timber cargo remained at the level of 2008 - 0.73 million tons. Shipments of outbound non-ferrous metals and metal products rose as much as 2.4 times and reached 0.37 million tons, of ferrous metals - up to 0.34 million tones (+5.6%). The volume of exported grain (between foreign ports) totaled 1.43 million tons, a year-over-year  40 percent rebound.

The NWS company during cargo navigation on inland waterways towed 25 barges, Northern Caspian-bound.

From May through October 2009, during the tourist season, excursion and pleasure boats were servicing the lines of Neva river basins, Gulf of Finland, Lake Ladoga, as well as the Lomonosov-Kronstadt ferry line.

In 2009 the company’s subsidiaries, shipyards’ revenues totaled $838.5 million rubles for provided services, a 39 percent growth from that of 2008.

In the summer navigation EWS provides inland waterways services for 11 river-sea ships of Western Shipping.

The NWS company also transports passengers and cargoes by "Andrew Korobitsyn" and "Nicholas Kaplunov" ferries on Lomonosov-Kronstadt lines, providing sightseeing tours for tourists on 13 excursion and recreational ships and VIP cruise boats "Neva" and "Resident of Leningrad”.
