The ship built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (South Korea) was launched on August 27, 2009. The vessel was named Marsk Nimes. The naming ceremony, attended by Alena Ashurkova, CEO of NCC, was held the same day.
Maersk Nimes is one of the five largest ocean-going ice-class vessels of N-series project. The ships can carry over 2.500 TEUs. In late 2009 the N-ships started sailing to St.Petersburg. The last ship of the series is to be launched in April 2010.
The company Maersk has ordered N-series ships for the service of ECUBEX meant to operate year-round the line, carrying to the port of St. Petersburg a large number of reefer containers on board (600).
Mrs. Ashurkova said she had been proud participating in the naming ceremony, adding she believed the National Container Company and the Maersk Line would further strengthen their long-term partnership. “The two companies are leaders in container shipment segment of the transportation market" the NCC’s president was quoted as saying.
National Container Company (NCC) is the largest Russian operator of container terminals, leading in the market of stevedoring services. The First Quantum and the Transport Group FESCO hold equal stakes in the NCC. In 2009 NCC Terminal’s container volumes totaled some 1.2 million TEUs or a 42.1 percent of the overall volume handled by all Russian container ports.
The NCC's portfolio of assets includes First Container Terminal (FCT, St. Petersburg), NUTEP Container Terminal (Novorossiysk), UKRTRANSCONTAINER Container Terminal (Ilyichevsk port, Odessa region, Ukraine), Ust-Luga Container Terminal (Leningrad region) and Logistics-Terminal, a rear container terminal and logistics center in Shushary of St. Petersburg.
