Freight traffic via the port of Klaipeda in Lithuania increased in January 2010 by 14.1% from the same period a year earlier, reaching 2.530.316,6 tons, the Port Authority statement said.
January 2010 statistics show a significant, 52.7 percent growth in transshipment of loose and bulked cargoes, up to 975.34,1 tons, general cargoes volumes were up by 21.7% to 665.546.3 tons. Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo in January 2010 fell 13.8% to 889.781.2 tons. Container turnover also dropped by 6.1%, to 19.804 TEUs.
Klaipeda port is the northernmost ice-free port on the East coast of the Baltic Sea, the largest transport hub of the Republic of Lithuania, which combines sea and land routes. As of now there are 17 stevedores operating at the port, as well as ship repair and shipbuilding companies, providing the full range of services related to marine business and handling of cargoes. Throughput of Klaipeda port for January-December 2009 shrank by 6.3 percent from the same period of 2008, to almost 27.866 million tons.
