Local Prosecutor’s Office finds responsible for oil spill and contamination of Avacha Bay in Kamchatka Region

Kamchatka Transport Prosecutor's Office (KTPO) conducted an audit in the North-Eastern Shipping Company Ltd., the shipowner of “Slavyanka Bay” tanker (home port of Nakhodka), which on February 6th, 2010 released petroleum products into waters of Avacha Bay. The audit established numerous breaches of legislation on maritime safety and marine environmental protection.

"Kamchatka Transport Prosecutor's Office demanded that the Director General of the North-Eastern Shipping Company to eliminate the detected violations and to prosecute those who have committed them", the Prosecutor's Office statement said.

Besides, in connection with violation of the requirements for loading and unloading vessels by the ship’s captain Kamchatsky Prosecutor’s Office on February 19, 2010 filed the administrative case. The Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky harbormaster has been informed about the KTPO’s move.

As the regional Kamchatsky Office of Rosprirodnadzor reported on February 9 it detected an oil spill - fuel oil F-5 during a regular monitoring of the Avachinskaya Bay in the Krasheninnikov Bay area. The incident occurred, the agency said, while transshipping heavy fuel oil from the “Slavyanka Bay” tanker. According to RosPrirodNadzor, some 4 tons of fuel oil leaked into the waters of the Bay. The report said approximately 4.5 hectares of waters were contaminated by the petroleum product spill.
