Sakhalin Shipping posts a profit of 40 m rubles, a fivefold drop

According to provisional data Sakhalin Shipping OJSC (SakhS, SASCO) ended up last year making a net profit of 40 million rubles, RZD-Partner.Ru reports quoting the company’s CEO Alexander Matsyuk. The reported figures show the company has a fivefold slump in revenues against 199.2 million rubles in 2008.

"This decline in our profit was caused by the fall in traffic volumes. In addition, we had to cut our tariffs competing for clients in the maritime transport market. Besides, we purchased three transport ships last year", Mr. Matsyuk said.

The Sakhalin Shipping Company transported nearly 2.6 million tons (a 15.6% drop), including 672.000 tons in coastal traffic and over 1.9 million tons in overseas lines. The international traffic decreased by one third, mainly due to a fall in import of automobiles. Also the company suffered a 9% cutback in passengers’ transportation, to 60.000 people.

In 2010, the shipping company authorities expect the growth in freight traffic thanks to the newly added multipurpose vessels and new shipment lines to Magadan, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Vladivostok and other Far East ports. "If we manage to keep the 2008 level that would be quite optimistic for us", said Alexander Matsyuk.

The SakhShipping intends to order at a Russian shipyard two container vessels to operate in Russia. Mr. Matsyuk said his company had been in talks with the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC).

Sakhalin Shipping Company is the only company that provides year-round transportation from ports de Castries, Vanino and Sovetskaya Gavan. The company operates its fleet comprising 21 transport ships (save icebreakers, tugs and other support craft). The vessels have ice-class and flying Russia’s flag. The company serves a ferry line between Sakhalin (the port of Kholmsk) and the mainland (the port of Vanino). The Sakhalin Shipping is the state-owned company holding 25.5% of shares. The other 4.000 stockholders are private companies and entrepreneurs.
