This year’s navigation starts later, ice conditions, high water

Navigation in 2010 on the Volga-Baltic waterway may open later than usual as the water is still high in rivers, lakes and reservoirs of the North-West, Alexander Alexeyev, deputy head of the Volga-Baltic State Basin Department of waterways and shipping (SBD Volga-Balt) said today at a press conference in St. Petersburg.

The official said, because of the high water in the Neva River there might be some difficulties while passing for large passenger vessel under bridges, in particular, under Kuzminsk rail bridge in the Leningrad region. There might be an increased flow velocity of the river that, in turn, make it harder for ships passing under the Great Neva bridges within the boundaries of St. Petersburg, Alexander Alexeyev said.

Volga-Baltic is one of the major waterways of the integrated deep system of inland waterways of the European part of Russia. Freight traffic via Volga-Baltic Canal in 2009 declined by almost 10% compared to navigation in 2008, to about 16.5 million tons of commodities.
